Long ago, there was a place called Sumer. People living there were called Sumerians. In those days, no one knew how to make paper. So, the Sumerians made big tablets out of soft clay. They wrote on these tablets with a sharp, pointed tool. Then they put the tablets out in the sun or in the fire till they were hard. Many tablets placed together made a very heavy book.
